"Mason, I want you to have this." Vidette was sitting on a park bench. She held out her hand. "What is it?" he asked. "It was my mothers. My father gave it to her before he left." He was confused. Why would she be giving him something that used to be her mothers. She placed a small chain into his hand. He unfurled the chain and saw a small snake charm on the end. "I hope you'll wear it." He looked up at her. She looked genuinely happy.
Two days later
"I don't have a choice Vidette!" Mason said into his phone. "I don't want to leave! But where I'm going I can never see you again." He was crying now. Tears rolled down his face, as he listened to her cry into the phone. "Mason, where are you going? Why can't you tell me?" "I love you Vidette." He pressed end and threw the phone across the airport bathroom. He stared at the phone for a moment then left, leaving his only means of communication with her behind.
Today
Mason lay back and stared up at the dimming sky, fiddling with his necklace. The small snake charm was the only thing of Vidette's that he had left. He let it drop back into his chest. and stared out at the water in front of him. The waves crashed against the giant sized boulders he'd climbed upon. The two separate memories burned in his skull. He closed his eyes and tried to forget what he'd done. and as the dusk turned to night he fell asleep atop the rocks.
